1974 Audi 100S Coupe RHD Trans swap

So, I have been talking to Theo on this one, and he has been very helpful. I have come across a completely original original owner 1974 Audi 100S Coupe. The owner wants me to do some maintenance on it, and change the gearing for something that is better on the highway. As it is, it turns about 4000RPM's at 70-75mph He would like it about 1000rpm lower at that speed. So, as Theo has suggested, I'd like to find the complete transmission and associated parts needed to swap the original 4-speed and inboard brakes for a later model 5-speed.

I am located in Houston, Texas, USA. We did not recieve the 5-speed with a 4-cyl combination in the 100 LS or the 5000 type43. We did get the 100LS with a 4-speed, and the type 43 with a 5-speed, but only behind the 5-cyl. No 4-cyl type 43's were imported to the US. So, if anyone has the complete setup for conveting this Coupe to a 5-speed, please let me know how much it will be. Oh, and i will also need the rear drums and spindles as well.

Also, if anyone knows the wheel bolt pattern for the stock setup on the car, as well as the 5-speed, please let me know.

I will begin taking pictures and posting them once I get the car here.

Thanks in advance,
Tony

Hello Tony,
It seems that you are determined to do such a gearbox and the other associated parts swap.
In that case I can imagine only three possible solutions to this problem.
a) You will need a 5geared gearbox and gear lever linkage from a typ43 100LS 1977-1980 models (WA 2.0 liter engine) and all the rest needed (braking system+front suspension+half axles+complete tie rods+weel hubs) should be taken off from an Audi 100LS/GL/Coupe S 1975-1976 models.
You will have to do some FITMENT modification job (piece of cake) to the gearbox mount on the body structure...
This solution is not recommended cause all these donor cars weren't imported in USA, so, you will have to import all of them from overseas... And the freight cost will be ASTRONOMICAL for all of these HEAVY weight spare parts...
b) You will need a 5geared gearbox from a Porsche 924 (2.0 liter NOT turbo engine) and then to convert it in that way to be used as a typical Audi gearbox! All the rest associated parts (plus the gear lever linkage from an Audi 5000 typ43) you will be able to taken off from an Audi 100LS fuelinjection 1975-1977 models. You will have to do the same piece of cake fitment modification job, as in the previous solution!
This solution is quite possible to have a low cost of buying the needed parts.
c) You will have to fabricate a special metal adaptoring plate to be able to install a more newer Audi models' gearbox to the original Audi 100 Coupe S engine. In that way you will be able to install almost every 5geared gearbox from Audi 5000/4000 models with 5cylindered engines (gasoline NOT turbo engines for better running results). The rest associated spare parts should be taken off from an Audi 100LS fuelinjection 1975-1977 USA model.
This solution maybe would be the CHEAPIEST and the more RELAXED to get all needed spare parts for such swap at the nearby area junk yards around your homeland...
The only worry of mine is about the machinery shop ability to fabricate such an adaptor gearbox plate.

In case you don't want to add labour time and expenses in this project, my advice is to look for a gearbox with WIRE DRIVEN CLUTCH and with tachometer wire outlet on its case... Other wise you will open other issues...

I wish you all the best luck to your spare parts HUNT... Let us know your HUNT's results...

I hope that you will receive some other ideas, too, from other Audi people around the world!
Feel free to ask anything you want about these old Audis... Or posting this swap procedure photos...
Be well,

Forget to add that the existing wheel pattern of the 74er RHD Audi 100 Coupe S car is 4x140. The wheel hubs (also wheel pattren) of the Audi 100 1975-1976 models had 4x108.
In that case you will need also to have the suitable rims and to swap also the rear brake/drums from the same Audi 100 LS/GL/Coupe S 1975-1976 models... I'm pretty sure that you will be able to swap also the small -in diameter- Audi 5000 typ 43 rear drums, too!

Take care!

Ok, thanks again for the information. I'll probably start by finding a suitable 75-77 Audi 100LS with outboard disc brakes. I'll definately post pictures as I go along on this project.

Please, let me know when you will find such an Audi 100ls Fuelinjection model as a donor car for your project... Maybe I will need your help to get some other parts from it, too!!!

Good LUCK!!!

Hello, gentlemen. I have purchased this car and it will be staying original! It is far too original and in amazing condition to modify. I understand wanting to go to a 5 speed, but for the 1000 miles or so I put on each of my old cars each year, I can deal with the higher RPMs at highway speed.
